In addition to their share in the gross world product, changes in the geopolitical significance of the state socialist experience are also reflected in the demographic proportions of the state socialist societies in the world. The data presented in Figure 3.5. suggest that between the Russian revolution and the creation of the socialist bloc after the Second World War about 9 percent of the world’s population was removed from capital’s direct access; during the Cold War (1947 to 1989), roughly one-third of humankind experienced state socialism in some form; since 1990, the remaining socialist states’ population share has fallen back to around 23 percent.
